The significance of an essay can be further appreciated if students look at it in different perspectives. By viewing the essay differently, students can also come up with different approaches that will make their essays more effective and impacting.
Learners view the essay as a venue where they can express what they have learned through writing. They know that the essays they write are used by their professors to evaluate their progress in writing. To ensure this goal, they make sure that the essays they write are both objective and subjective. Their essays are objective in a sense that they are able to enumerate the concepts they have learned through the entire learning process. On the other hand, their essays also demonstrate subjectivity in the sense that they are able to integrate their own personal opinion on the issue presented, which must also be backed up with sufficient data.
Aside from being learners, the students must not also fail to recognise their role as educators when writing the essay. By being an educator, they know what domains of development (the cognitive, psychomotor, affective and social) their professors are looking for in an essay; they must include any information to indicate that they have truly acquired holistic development through their essays. They do not also fail to recognise that as an educator, they have a responsibility to impart significant information to readers who might want to learn more about the topic that the essay has presented. With this, the writers make sure that the essays they have completed are all clear and concise, sealing their readability for their readers.
By taking the role as communicators, the students understand the importance of determining the target readers of their essays. If they can specifically identify what their readers are looking for in an essay, they can easily choose what specific words and writing style to use that has more impact for their readers. They understand that by being communicators, they have to make sure that the readers acquired the correct message they want to convey. They then make use of stringent grammar rules and essay writing guidelines to help them complete essays that will further their causes.
