Determining Your Reading Habits

Improving your reading skills is closely tied to identifying and improving your reading habits. Most of you have not fully realised how reading has become one of the most important skills to be considered in the process of completing your essay writing assignments. If you cannot easily grasp the context of what you have read the first time, it will take you longer to finish your research and, ultimately, complete your essay. By the time you are through with your essay, you may not have enough time to finish your other coursework assignments.

If you can easily determine the level of proficiency of your reading habits, you will know what your weaknesses are and learn to improve from these weaknesses.

  • Do you completely understand what you read when looking for information for your essay? Do you almost always get one kind of question right or wrong?

If you are able to do all that is implied, you probably are able to comprehend most things that are in the material, but this means that you still need to improve your reading comprehension.

  • Have you ever noticed that you slow down when you come to a new or hard part in your reading? Or do you always read at the same pace?

It is a misconception to say that the fastest readers are the best readers. On the other hand, neither are the slowest readers. The best readers are those who can change their speed to suit the difficulty of the material they are reading, especially when looking for relevant material for their essays.

  • Do you find yourself rereading often?

You may have the habit of rereading groups of two or three sentences as you work through a passage. This means that you keep losing your pace and forget the content of your passage. This further leads to losing a lot of valuable time. Rather than reread the material several times, you can set a smoother pace of your reading so you can go over the material in one round.
