When adding graphics in your essay, you make your essay more interesting. Adding graphics is also another way of reflecting how thorough you have undergone your research so you can acquire information from different forms. There are statistical data that are best explained using a table, graph or diagram.

Some professors have definite ideas on how your essay should appear, and they may refuse to accept your essay if it does not conform to their set guidelines. If your professors have given you freedom on how to present the graphics, you can follow the standard rule.

Tables should be identified with a Roman numeral written at the top of the table. Titles are written below the number and above the table. An identifying caption should appear below the graphic. Number your graphical material consecutively throughout your essay.

Your graphics can be inserted into your essays in various ways. You can fit in a small table or illustration on the same page with its supplementary text. If you select this method, you will have to do some careful planning before you insert them. If you have more than a few pages of graphics, it is more advisable to put it in a separate appendix at the end of the essay.

When inserting graphics within the text of your essay, make sure that it appears after the first text that mentions the information presented in the essay. Otherwise, the reader may get confused by your graphic’s odd appearance and its purpose. You can also be more specific in mentioning your graphic to make it more understandable to your readers.
